Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Orange County

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, is a powerful way to break free from intrusive or maladaptive thoughts and emotions by cultivating psychological flexibility. At Capo Canyon, we guide you through ACT’s proven methods in a private, supportive environment so you can embrace your values, commit to meaningful change, and build a life even in the face of substantial pain or uncertainty.

ACT is an evidence-based form of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps you develop psychological flexibility, or the ability to stay present, open up to difficult feelings, and take action guided by your deepest values.

Unlike approaches that try to eliminate uncomfortable thoughts, ACT teaches you to accept what you cannot control while committing to behaviors that enrich your life. Through experiential exercises, mindfulness practices, and values clarification, ACT shifts your relationship with internal experiences.

You learn to notice thoughts and emotions without getting entangled in them, so you can respond effectively instead of reacting automatically. Over time, this leads to reduced suffering, greater resilience, and a stronger sense of purpose.

Key Principles of ACT

ACT is built on a core of six interconnected processes, known as the “hexaflex” model, that all work together to cultivate psychological flexibility. These six processes are:

  1. Acceptance: Opening up to unpleasant feelings instead of fighting or avoiding them
  2. Cognitive Defusion: Learning to observe thoughts without believing every story they tell
  3. Present-Moment Awareness: Engaging fully with the here and now rather than dwelling on past or future
  4. Self-as-Context: Experiencing a sense of self that is distinct from changing thoughts and emotions
  5. Values Clarification: Identifying what truly matters to you in areas such as relationships, work, and personal growth
  6. Committed Action: Setting goals guided by your values and taking concrete steps toward them

By consistently practicing these processes, you’ll be able to build flexibility to face life’s challenges with openness and choose actions that align with your established values. This holistic approach reduces experiential avoidance and replaces it with purposeful living.

ACT at Capo Canyon: Our Approach

At Capo Canyon, we deliver ACT within a comprehensive treatment framework tailored to your needs. After an initial assessment, our licensed therapists design an ACT plan that integrates individual sessions, group workshops, and mindfulness practices.

In one-on-one therapy, you work through experiential exercises such as values journaling and perspective-taking metaphors to solidify each hexaflex process. Group ACT workshops reinforce these skills in a supportive peer environment, where you practice acceptance and defusion exercises together.

We schedule regular mindfulness labs that teach focused breathing and body-scan techniques to anchor you in the present moment. Our serene hill country setting enhances these practices, offering natural spaces for guided meditation and reflective walking. Throughout your stay, a dedicated case manager coordinates ACT with other therapies like EMDR or DBT to address co-occurring issues like trauma or emotion-regulation difficulties.

Each week, we review your committed-action goals, adjust strategies based on your progress, and celebrate achievements that reflect your values. This iterative process ensures ACT does not remain theoretical but becomes woven into your daily life.

By the time you complete the program, you’ll possess a robust toolkit for accepting inner experiences, defusing unhelpful thoughts, and taking value-driven action long after you leave Capo Canyon.

The staff here has changed my life. I will never forget everything they all have done but I will never forget how much the nurse Jeanie helped me. The therapist there is also amazing and I wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't for them. I recommend this place to everyone I know who is struggling.

If you’ve ever been to treatment and found yourself at capo canyon it would be readily apparent that this place is different from any treatment center in the United States. Nobody arrives at a detox/stabilization program in their best shape but what sets capo canyon apart is the care and compassion the on-site nurses and all the staff show.

Our daughter has been at Casa for 90 days and has been in previous rehab centers. At Casa she has made amazing progress and she has been a some what difficult case to deal with. We have had an open line of communication with the Center and they have been tremendously helpful not only with our daughter but supporting us along the way. I would recommend Casa for anyone needing professional help in various areas.

How ACT Can Help Addiction and Mental Health

Breaking the Cycle of Experiential Avoidance

ACT helps you move away from the unhelpful pattern of avoiding painful thoughts, feelings, or cravings. Instead of fighting urges or pushing away distressing memories, you learn to make space for those experiences while remaining focused on your values. This shift reduces the power of triggers—whether substance-related urges or anxiety-provoking thoughts—and diminishes the likelihood of relapse.

Enhancing Emotional Resilience

By practicing acceptance and cognitive defusion, you develop greater tolerance for uncomfortable emotions. When cravings or negative self-talk arise, you observe them as passing mental events rather than commands that must be obeyed. Over time, this resilience translates into improved stress management, reduced anxiety, and a more balanced mood.

Clarifying Life Direction

Values clarification is a core ACT process that encourages you to identify what matters most, such as family connection, career integrity, or personal growth. With clear values, you set meaningful goals and take committed action steps that align with your true priorities. This sense of purpose counteracts the aimlessness that often accompanies addiction and depression.

Improving Interpersonal Relationships

ACT fosters openness and authenticity in communication. As you practice present-moment awareness and self-as-context, you become more attuned to others’ perspectives and less reactive during conflicts. These skills strengthen relationships with family, friends, and peers, providing a supportive network that bolsters long-term recovery.

Sustainable Long-Term Change

Because ACT emphasizes skill development rather than symptom elimination, the benefits endure beyond treatment. You leave Capo Canyon with practical tools—mindfulness exercises, defusion techniques, and values-driven action plans—that integrate seamlessly into daily life, ensuring continued growth and stability.

What Does a Typical Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Session Look Like?

Each ACT session at Capo Canyon lasts approximately 60 minutes and combines experiential exercises with reflective discussion. While each individual’s sessions will be unique to them, the typical session structure is as follows:

  1. Check-In and Values Reminder: You begin by sharing successes and challenges since your last session. Your therapist revisits one or two personal values you’re working toward to anchor the conversation.
  2. Experiential Exercise: Guided metaphors or activities, such as the “leaves on a stream” visualization, help you practice acceptance and cognitive defusion in real time. You might observe thoughts drifting by like leaves or engage in role-plays to explore self-as-context.
  3. Skill Application: You and your therapist translate insights from the exercise into concrete strategies. For example, you may develop a script for noticing a craving without acting on it or plan a values-based activity for the coming week.
  4. Mindfulness Practice: Each session incorporates a brief mindfulness or grounding technique, such as focused breathing or a body scan, to reinforce present-moment awareness.
  5. Committed Action Planning: You leave with one or two specific, achievable action steps tied to your values, like calling a family member, committing to attending a support meeting, or just practicing a mindfulness exercise each day.
  6. Session Wrap-Up: Your therapist reviews progress metrics, answers questions, and schedules the next appointment. You receive handouts or digital resources to support between-session practice.

Combining ACT With Other Therapies

When you partner with Capo Canyon, we can easily blend your ACT with other complementary treatments to address the entire spectrum of your recovery and wellness needs.

Following ACT sessions, you might engage in cognitive behavioral therapy to challenge specific thought patterns that emerge during values work. Dialectical behavior therapy adds skills for managing intense emotions, while EMDR targets deeper trauma that can undermine committed action.

Our holistic services include yoga, equine therapy, and nutrition counseling to help reinforce ACT’s emphasis on the mind-body connection and help you practice acceptance in varied contexts. By coordinating these modalities through weekly team consultations, we ensure your treatment plan remains cohesive, adaptable, and precisely aligned with your personal goals.
